Peep Holes

Peep holes are probably among the most effective and simplest form of safety measure in the home. Door peep holes provide an easy way of identifying the person on the front door through a simple peek, thus being able to decide whether to open the door or not to strangers.

Fundamentally speaking, a door peep hole is merely a “peering hole”, which is drilled through the door; and a small tube-like item with lens is inserted to the drilled hole that allows a clear sight when peeped into. They are typically placed on front doors as these are the usual entry areas for callers.

Front door peep holes are designed to provide the resident a magnified view of their entry door’s exterior, therefore making it more convenient and easier to see who’s on the other side, and creates an excellent added measure of safety for the residents in the home.

Peep holes are very easy to install and only takes about less than thirty-minutes to put in; it also requires only minimal equipment for installation. A home owner with a “do-it-yourself” skill can fit one in with no trouble. Here are the easy steps of installing peep holes to doors:

Step 1
Gather all the equipment and materials you will need for smooth and uninterrupted installation: one peephole; one pencil; one battery drill kit which includes a number of drill bits and a few flat woodcutting bits; one tape measure; and one pair of safety goggles.

Step 2
Choose the right peep hole. Peep holes come in various lengths –make sure that the peephole’s length that you select, matches the thickness of the door that you will be fitting it into.

Step 3
Mark the place that you will be fitting the peep hole in. It is important to place the peep hole in a comfortable height; as well as where it is “customarily” installed –the center. When the comfortable height placement has been decided, mark its position. Next, find the door’s center point, and draw a line to where it will intersect with the “height mark”.

Step 4
Drill the pilot hole. Choose a screwdriver bit, and then attach it to the drill; drilling a “pilot hole” will prevent the wood from cracking when the larger hole for the peephole’s body is drilled.

Before starting to drill, keep in mind to drill safely; put on goggles and ensure that every loose item of jewelry, hair, and clothing are tucked away. Clear the place of whatever potential risks, and find a stable standing position. Next, drill on the pencil mark until the drill bit emerges through the opposite side of the door.

Step 5
Drill a main hole. Choose a “flat woodcutting bit” which is roughly 2mm wider than the peephole’s body, and attach to the drill. Place the bit over the drilled pilot hole, and then drill through. Blow out the sawdust.

Step 6
Fit the peep hole. Peep holes come in two pieces: first, put in the widest piece –the eyepiece-into the door’s “inside” part. Next, push the other piece into the door’s “outside” part.

With these simple and easy steps, one can add an effective safety measure to their homes. Peep holes are inexpensive approaches to home security, yet they provide great means of making the home safer for the family. Don’t take the risk of not being able to identify the person standing behind your front door; peep holes don’t take much of an effort or money to keep unwanted strangers out of the home.

Wouldn’t it be better if you got the simple benefits of peep holes and peacefully know that you’ve added another way to protect you, your family, and your home? If you still don’t have a peep hole on your front door, then maybe its time you put one in.
